Authoritarian is definitely a word for it. There’s a reason there are so many demons.

There must be something stopping the gene pool going weird, because all the humans are descended from the same original pair. אדם and חוה begat everyone. נח had like, three sons? And they had wives from outside the family. So they were just dripping in genetic diversity, comparatively.

[sorry I can’t resist being more precise with the names than the weird mutated English versions]

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-02 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
That is a terrible way to create life.

When my people introduced new concepts to the star, they always created several pairs and scattered them throughout their intended habitat.

[ Crowley, your Almighty sucks. ]

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-02 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Not as terrible as making a whole universe full of stars and nebulae and wonders, and then declaring that you're going to destroy the whole thing after only six thousand years, before it's even gotten a chance to spin up properly.

[He's not arguing with that.]
emet_sulk: (A29 Heavens above)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-02 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Only six thousand years? What a waste. Even mine has existed for far, far longer than that.
thindarkduke: (what are you talking about)

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-02 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
How old're you, then? Approximately. Since it seems to have had as much trouble with you there as it did me.

And yes, terrible waste. Part of why I Fell was for questioning that choice. All my beautiful nebulae barely given a chance to shine. Baby stars never getting to grow up.
emet_sulk: (A09 How curious)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-03 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ Bit of a pause while he...tries to calculate. Approximately. ]

I did not bother to keep track after a certain point, but I recall that mankind's modern history began some twelve thousand years ago. I was granted my title some centuries or millennia before that, when I was already well into adulthood.

I suppose I must be some fifteen thousand to twenty thousand years old.

[ Give or take a millennia. Maybe?? He genuinely doesn't remember now. ]
thindarkduke: (really bro)

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-03 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Much older than most of this lot seem to be, then. I haven’t exactly counted, but… there were definitely thousands if not millions of years before the Fall, and like I said Earth was around six thousand years before its scheduled (averted) demolition, and I was there for all of it. Things when I was an angel are a bit fuzzy, though. Hard to make much of a judgment.

What is your title, then?
emet_sulk: (A19 Looking up)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-04 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
[ He didn't think he would meet an entity older than himself or Lahabrea. This one should be afforded his respect. ]

Emet-Selch, as you doubtless saw. This...thing confused my title with my name.

[ In fact with a bit of squinting, Crowley may realise what 'emet selch' means. ]

Hades is my true name.
thindarkduke: (I mean)

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-04 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
אמת… You big on truth? Or are you a guardian?

Hades is a name with interesting implications, where I’m from. The Greeks revered a god of the underworld, of the dead, by that name.
emet_sulk: (A20 That can't be right)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-04 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what you're asking. The seat of Emet-Selch has always gone to one with the keenest soulsight as they preside over all matters pertaining to the aetherial realm. It should have gone to an old friend of mine but he declined and nominated me instead.

I am no god either but I do possess an affinity for the Underworld. I can call upon its power and guide souls to their rest.
thindarkduke: (one more thing)

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-05 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Just commenting on linguistic similarities, I suppose. אמת, which gets written in English as 'emet', means truth. And there are stories of it being inscribed on the foreheads of clay statues to bring them to life to protect people.

No god, but your people create life, and you have some charge of the dead?
emet_sulk: (AMR 02)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-05 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
[ Maybe if things hadn't turned out the way they did, that is who he would have become. ]

Yes, well, the concept of 'god' is relative to the ones who created it, is it not?

I can sit here and insist I am not a god but that would not matter to the mortal man whose scope of knowledge and existence is contained within mortal boundaries. I am immortal if I'm not struck down by sickness or fatal injury; I had a hand in the creation of concepts still seen in the present day; by their terms, I would be a god.

Meanwhile MY people did create a god, but can a god truly be a god if they were sculpted by hand and all their flaws and limitations known? 'Tis hubris, I think, to think oneself a god. Mortal men have done so more times than I can count and always fallen for it. My own people were so blinded by complacency that they were almost entirely consumed by their own despair.

So, as interesting as it is that I share a name with a god worshipped on your star, I think I shall continue to see myself as any other man, because I would think fourteen gods would not need to sacrifice half their people to avert their star's end.
thindarkduke: (I mean)

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-07 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough.

...Was that the genocide, then? Sacrifice to avert the end?
emet_sulk: (A18 Prepostorous)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-07 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
No.

I wish that was all we did.
thindarkduke: (really bro)

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-07 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
[This probably calls for... a topic change. Crowley isn't necessarily tactful, but even he can recognize when something is real uncomfortable for everyone.]

So did you have cell phones on your star, or is this new for you?

[Look, no one said he was good at changing topics.]
emet_sulk: (A16 The Third Seat)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-07 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
[ He appreciates the effort, abrupt though it is. ]

I don't know what those are. Are you talking about this method of communication?
thindarkduke: (aw really)

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-07 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of, I guess? I mean these look like cell phones, and they seem to basically work like them, except that they're apparently part magic and they're called an axxxess link or whatever.
emet_sulk: (A17 Ridiculous)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-07 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
There are various forms of communication used on my star.

The three continents of Eorzea favour linkshells, which are small, pearl-like objects that sit in the ear and operate by attuning to aether.

Garlemald has devices which utilise radiating frequences or 'radiowaves' as they have come to be called.

However, in ages past, the Allagan Empire made use of a hybrid of magic and technology - magitech - to produce a device similar to the one used here.

In other words, I suppose this is not new to me.
thindarkduke: (really bro)

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-14 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of variety. Magitech is interesting... I'm not used to mortals having anything like. Where I'm from, the humans only have technology, no magic. And angels and demons have stuff that runs on miracles.
emet_sulk: (A29 Heavens above)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-15 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Are miracles not magic?
thindarkduke: (what no)

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-19 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not as such? I mean, in fiction about magic, it's usually pretty distinct from miracles. Magic can source from all kinds of things. Miracles come only from the divine (or the profane, as the case may be).
emet_sulk: (02 I only felt it once)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-19 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I fail to see the difference when even 'divine' beings in my world are subject to the star's natural laws.

Miracles are simply feats which are not yet fully understood. How do YOU define them?
thindarkduke: (one more thing)

[personal profile] thindarkduke 2024-04-19 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
My miracles aren’t subject to natural laws. My miracles once laid out natural laws, put them into effect where they had not been, when I was an angel. The Almighty created the universe and everything in it, angels and demons included. Every miracle is a sliver of Her power, something that would never happen without it.

Let there be mass, let there be gravity, let there be light.
emet_sulk: (A24 Our final encore)

oops I used the wrong face back there

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2024-04-22 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
[ Thinking about it, that does sound like what his people did. Although many of them would argue they did not create sentience.

(And probably just as many would argue that they did.) ]

I see. I suppose then from your perspective I and my people are 'angels'.

What were those letters you used before for my title?
