He was ready to pull the trigger on his quirk to give him the propulsion he needed to cinch it, especially when this weird chick was going to pull out something (he's conditioned to assume it's her own "quirk"), but in the end he didn't need it. His own aerodynamics and lower mass meant he has just enough of a lead to win. Not the indisputable victory he always howls about, but it's a victory nonetheless, and one he is still proud of...considering he's only figured this shit out maybe thirty or forty minutes ago? It really does just show how smart and adaptable Katsuki is when he wants to be - his mind can go a mile a minute if he's left to apply himself and think of his toes.

Though, as they all come back down to the earth, instead of gloating about his victory, Katsuki is actually making a beeline right to the racer's tent, to grab a sports drink and cool himself off. He always risks overheating, and dehydration, when he uses his quirk in excess, so refueling with water and high electrolyte beverages is a must sometimes. He's unscrewing the top off a bottle, and tips it in her direction before taking a big gulp.]
